I am so excited to show you the new painting on the outside of our house!!!! We went with a soft gray and color blocking chunks of charcoal.
@thenester recently shared a photo on her Instagram Stories (originally posted by @twothirtyfivedesigns) that was white and black color blocking on a home’s exterior. It seriously stopped me dead in my scroll, and I couldn’t get that picture out of my head. I loved it so much.
So, when it came time to repaint the house before the Equipped Conference, I knew I wanted to do something similar with a more soft difference between the two colors. We wanted a soft, light grey, and a charcoal color and you kind of got a sneak peek of the new paint in our blog post about painting the deck and our GOLD exterior lights!
So, I got with my friend Deb and told her my idea. She drew up a couple of drawings for us in her decorating software and Jason and I loved it.
We tested out several colors including SW Mindful Gray which is on top, but decided to go with “Repose Gray” for the main body color (it’s the color Ari is standing in front of).
Ari was our official color tester. lol.
For the trim, around the front door, and around the garage door we used Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore.
Here is a picture so you can see how brown the house was and the new light gray color going up on the side.
This is a great photo of the old trim color and the new Iron Ore trim color.
I think exterior paint colors are soooo hard. I tell people who are getting ready to paint the exterior of their house is to always go a shade darker than what you think, because when a color is used outside and the sun is on it, it turns out so much lighter than you think it will.
Also try several paint colors on several different areas of the house (front, sides, back), look at it at different times of the day, and on sunny days and cloudy days so you can really get a feel for the true color. The exterior paint color of the house is not something you should do on a whim or impulse. This is honestly one of those things where I would prefer you consult with a color professional or a decorator. Because if you end up not liking the color you went with, it’s not like a dining room paint job and it’s gonna cause you a hot nickel to change it. Ha!
Here’s a before and after photo for my super visual friends!
And here’s the view from the golf course!
I LOVE the color blocking on the house and I love how much the charcoal grey contrasts with our fabulous GOLD front door! Check out the blog post on that HERE if you haven’t seen it!

As always, I have a graphic below so you can save this on your Pinterest home board!

Amazing transformation! What a fabulous way to transform a home’s exterior for a fairly low cost, compared to the cost of new hard surfaces such as stone, siding, etc.
