I have a simple hack for drilling perfect drawer hardware holes every time! This comes in handy when you have matching drawers — whether cabinets, furniture or built-ins!
This can be any furniture painter’s and cabinet painter’s worst fear. I always hated changing out hardware. But this solution will keep all of your handles, knobs and pulls in the exact same spot on every drawer front.

We just painted our master bedroom and bathroom navy and now it’s time to tackle every woman’s favorite space… the closet!!!
Our new master bedroom closet has a closet on the backside of it, I know strange, huh? Well in this inner 2nd closet is a built-in dresser, which was in need of a makeover.
We painted it but decided it still needed some pizazz on the flat front.
So while out shopping, we found some cut glass drawer handles that I knew would be perfect! You can also find similar ones on Amazon, like these, or some from Target, like these. I also found some cute vintage crystal ones from Pottery Barn here.
Since we had to first drill holes for the hardware, I just knew I had to use my simple template hack that easily ensures every hole was in the center of each drawer.
The template is super easy to make with some craft paper or, in a pinch, the back side gift wrapping paper.
So here’s how to make and use my quick template for centering drawer knobs:
First, lay the backside of the wrapping paper against the drawer front and press against the drawer edges to bend over the paper, in effect hugging the drawer edge.
I really just used my nails to press down and fold it over Then cut the paper.
Next, measure and mark the center of the drawer front.
Then, put the template paper back on in order to mark the center again.
Place the drawer front on top of the paper and drill through both.
Remove the paper. Now you have a paper template you can use to drill the remaining drawer fronts so they all match! Simple, huh? Saves a ton of time and frustration.
Now your hole is in the middle of the drawer front.
Voila! Ten matching centered drawer handles with such an easy hack.
See that little pink area?? it’s supposed to be a luggage storage area and we are going to enclose it with a door! Stay tuned. Sign up for my home project emails here.

I have a much simpler method of finding the center….. Just tape a pc. of string from the top left corner of the drawer to the bottom right. Tape another pc. from the top right corner to the bottom left. Where they cross in the middle is where you mark your center hole. Simple and only takes a few seconds.
the string idea is awesome. i could handle that!
It’s really simple indeed, love this hack! Thanks for sharing the idea, will make it here too!
Jennifer – I have used this idea before and it truly is the simplest and most accurate method! Would you mind sharing the source for the carpeting that you have in your closet? It’s so pretty!
Thanks!
