Endtable makeover with video on “WORM HOLING”

I had a client purchase 2 of these end tables off of Craigslist. Seriously….what did we do before Craigslist?

She wanted them to match her coffee table which is black and distressed on the bottom and stained with some “worm holes” on the top.

First, they had to be cleaned. They didn’t even look dirty…. but, look at what came off of them. Ew!

I put plastic on the top of the tables as not get black paint on it. Ava stripped in the front yard. Just a normal day at our house.

I sprayed the black paint. And after it dried, I sanded back the edges of the paint to see the stain coming through in spots.

The tops of the tables were kind of beat up. So, I added a bit more distressing. Sometimes that’s easier than making it look perfect. I added “worm holes” to the top of the tables (which was on the coffee table the client already had) and added another coat of stain to them. You can see here one top has been re-stained and the other is still a bit lighter.

Then the topcoat.

And here is the finished product:

Didn’t they turn out great?

I did a video for you all on how to “WORM HOLE”. It’s a no brainer…but now you will all have a visual.

I sooooooooo need a manicure. Forgive the chipped polish, OK?

I see that you used Rustoleum 2X on your tables…I used it the other day for the 1st time and it didn’t seem to coat very evenly…not a smooth cover. Yours looks so perfect….do you think I am doing something wrong? It truly looks like I spray painted it. And another question…I am painting an old wooden dining room table cream – what paint do you suggest? I am just painting it for fun and will probably sell it after! Thanks…patti

I love your blog and website. You inspire me so. I have 3 pieces of matchy matchy furniture. It’s that pickled colored furniture. I’m sorry I don’t know the real name of the color. I’d like to update it and paint it white & distress it for our guest bedroom which is a robin’s egg blue color.

What’s the best way to do that? Thanks for any help you can give me. 🙂

    The tables turned out beautifully.

Wow, looks great! Love that a normal day at your house involves your little girl getting comfy in the front yard…life should be so carefree. So cute!

I would love to know how you restained the tops. I have some beams in my living room. They are oak colored and I am thinking of restaining darker. I don’t want to sand it down. Did you sand and then restain?

Hi Jennifer — Ava is so hilarious! She is always up to something while you’re working away — what a little character she is. LOL. Thank you so much for your assistance on Sunday. Many hugs to you!!! I was going to ask the same question as Tracy — did you sand before re-applying a darker stain? These tables look like a million bucks. Excellent job — just beautiful.

“Seriously….what did we do before Craigslist?”

I found myself thinking the same thing today. Too funny.

Once again a fantabulous job! I didn’t know those little holes had a name – very cool. I need to get a better spiky thing.

I don’t know what we did before Craigs List… lots of people must have had lots of unwanted things and people like us were bored. I am so glad it exhists.

I am so excited and had to tell you that i am picking up a stereo cabinet tonight! I can’t wait to work on it but its going to be a while because i have sooo many projects i need to finish. I hope yours sold – it was so beautiful!

    Have a good week!

They turned out beautifully and look so professional ~ as all of your work does! What type of stain did you use?

Ava is a hoot! I’m sure she was much more comfortable…

Oh, I love wood tops with painted bases. I don’t know why I can’t get my spray paint to look like yours, though. I’m a foam roller kinda girl.

I’ve got to tell you – you just amaze me. I have never known what to call those little holes, I’ve never really distressed my furniture plus I am a Craig’s list virgin. I have some rugs I want to sell. They were rather pricy but I am just sooooooo over them. Do I need to worry that somebody seedy will come into my house? How do you handle these things? As for the distressing furniture, I have always been more about the patterns but I’m thinking these techniques would work beautifully together. You are my muse.

They turned out fabulous!! Love them…so much fun to make a beautiful project by yourself!! I was wondering also, if you just applied the stain over the already stained tops? I hate having to sand everything!! 🙂
