Painted Front Door | Magic Brush

So I am so, so excited to tell you about the new paint line from Modern Masters that I just got to try.  It’s called Front Door Paint and I used it to take my neighbor Jody’s front door from a ho-hum, weathered black to a hellllllllllllllo hot red color!  The change is amazing!

This post may contain affiliate links which I provide to make your project easier and it helps fund this blog!

I had recently saw the Front Door Paint on my friend Dana’s blog .  She went gutsy, gutsy, gutsy with the color “Fortunate” and I couldn’t love it more (and let’s say hello to her porch stencil, shall we?). The very NAMES of the colors are fascinating to me. They are named off of an “emotional color wheel”.  I feel so smart just typing that.  Who wouldn’t want a front door with the name color “Motivated” or “Successful“???

My neighbor wanted the red color “PASSIONATE“… it’s perfect with her gray house color!  And, she didn’t want me to remove the handles and locks.  She asked me just to tape them off and really….. you can do it either way.  It’s easier when they are off to get a smooth finish all over.  But, she wanted to be able to shut and lock her door that night and #1) I don’t want my clients getting robbed in the middle of the night and #2) she’s the boss, applesauce.  So I taped it off.

I wasn’t sure what paint finish was on the door. It was a faux finish but since I didn’t do it and wasn’t sure of the products used, I primed the door with a gray first.  TIP:  priming with GRAY will make covering with RED so much easier.

The supply list for a painted front door is short….. a 4″ mohair roller or 4″ velour roller roller are my favorites for doors and wanting a smooth finish.  A decent brush for around the lock.  A really NICE, clean, never-been-used-before stir stick is a must (that’s sarcasm). That’s it!   I had watched this video on how Modern Masters suggests you use the Front Door Paint.  Cutest video ever and since I’m a total rule follower, I did as they said.

I painted the panels first. And then the whole door.  I did 2 coats on the whole thing but seriously……. it covered so well that if I had used a red primer, one coat would have almost done it.  Also, it dried down super fast, very smooth and went so quick that I did it in a few hours and didn’t have to recoat the next day.  I could have avoided the whole “getting robbed overnight if we leave the hardware off her door” conundrum if I had know how quick it would go.  The front door paint is supposed to never fade and I didn’t even use a 1/2 quart…. so if any other neighbors want in on the “Passionate” door action, I have enough left!

And seriously….. her painted front door is Aaaaaaaaamazing.  It made her whole entryway POP!  And was a huge surprise to her husband who came home and said what we’ve all heard before “oh, I didn’t know you were thinking of repainting the front door today”.  Silly husbands.  When we get the urge, we gotta paint!

So here is the before and after.  And before you ask, I will tell you that Jody’s huge pots came from Wal-mart and her lanterns are from Hobby Lobby.  You may have seen the little video I made about her pots on my Facebook page.  If you saw the video last week, you know I would make a horrible robber.

Be sure to check out the fun color options for your new painted front door — just look at Amazon!

Happy Painting,

Jen

Our front door is the final color we have to select. We are leaning towards turquoise but the MM Passionate is so welcoming.
