When we moved into the house, the basement had 3 large windows in the place where we decided to put the door going out to the pool.

large hole in the back of the house where sliding glass door would be installed

We thought about doing some Florida accordion doors that pull all the way back so it would be this HUGE area of openness. We also talked about doing a garage door in this space but we weren’t able to get that passed with the city.

So, we opted for a really oversized accordion, sliding glass door.

We wanted to really draw some attention to this glass door from the back of the house. You can see the back of our house from the golf course, and it was important to us that we made it obvious that THIS was the way we wanted people to come into our house instead of the little side door.

So, during the basement remodel (blog posts on that HERE and HERE!), we had our contractor, David Nelson, build an arbor that matches our shutters in the front of the house that you can see HERE.

I absolutely loooove how it turned out. It just adds the perfect amount of dimension to the area. You can get all the details on the exterior paint colors HERE.

A lot of people keep asking me about the Agave plants… gotta tell ya, my friend. They’re FAKE. lol. My friend Deb from Metropolitan Designs purchased ours from Nebraska Furniture Mart. I found some similar agave plant options for you HERE and HERE!

Those cobalt blue planters are from a local nursery in Kansas City and I found a similar option for you online HERE. We actually filled those planters with newspaper and empty gallon jugs. And then we put the agave way up on the top because otherwise they would have been totally buried in the pot! We added some rocks for some extra contrast and texture too. The grey and blue rug is from Nebraska Furniture Mart.

There you have it, friends! I love how the arbor turned out and I especially love that we’re drawing more attention to this area from the back of the house, now!
