Polka Dot Pumpkin | Jennifer Allwood

I’m seriously in love with this pumpkin.  It was so quick and so easy and it’s just so……. FANCY.

(This post has a few affiliate links for the products I use, love and recommend.)

My assistant Vicki (God bless her.  She was just off for 4 days and I went in to mourning) was out shopping for my pumpkin supplies and found these finials on clearance at Hobby Lobby.

I had originally planned on chevroning the pumpkin but then was in taping h-e-double l  with chevron tape, so ditched the idea for polka dots.  So much easier.  Say hello to my adorable helper by the way.  My son Easton is a rock star.

These are my polka dotting tools of choice. (You can purchase them HERE too.) These are from Hobby Lobby or Michael’s and are called “daubers” or “spouncers” or “Jennifer’s favorite tool”.  It’s a sponge on a stick.  Genius.  Why didn’t I think of that???????

You dip your spouncer into black ACRYLIC paint (It’s thicker so won’t run).

(More of my polka dot painting tips are HERE)

And then do what I call “punch and twist”.  You push the tool onto the pumpkin (the punch) and spin in a circle (the twist).  If you don’t twist, it sometimes won’t leave a complete circle.  Coincidentally, this is also my technique for killing spiders and the like.  I punch and twist.  If I just punch, I’ve learned they sometimes get away.  lol. Random.

WHILE THE DOTS ARE WET (key point), sprinkle glitter over the wet paint.  This means you may only be able to do a few dots in the paint and then glitter.  A few more in the paint and so on.

I wanted to show you that I didn’t have 100% perfection on the dots. But we aren’t looking for perfection, right?  No one will ever know but the jillion of you I am sharing it with.  Ha!

We tied raffia (is that what it’s called?) to the top of the finial and called it done!

And here I am showing it off at the Red Barn Farm in Weston, MO this weekend where I had a great time doing pumpkin demonstrations.  In truth, I’m really just including the pic so you can see my favorite necklace and new Magic Brush tshirt!  ha!  But the Red Barn Farm people rock!

In other news, it’s quite possible that my online friend Ruthie from DecRenew Interiors was the maverick of pumpkin finials as hers is the only other ones I’ve seen.  This is from her Pinterest page here.   Go tell Ruthie you think she is genius, will you?   LOVE it.

Ok friends.  Fall is here.  Get to pumpkin painting!

xoxo,

Jennifer

My friend is getting married 10/25 and asked me to do the decorations. She wants painted pumpkins for aisle decor. When should I buy and paint them so they will still look good the day of the wedding?
