A Boy’s Room Navy Desk Transformation

I purchased this cute desk at a garage sale last weekend for $25.00. The desk is 42 years old…It has “good bones”. It was made by the seller’s grandfather. The chair was her old highchair cut down to fit the desk. I was shocked she didn’t want to pass it on to another family member. I snagged it!
This post contains affiliate links for products I use and LOVE. Any purchases will help support my blog and DIY projects – Thank you!

To no one’s surprise, my Ava thought it was a jungle gym…. so I had to jump on the project before we had a disaster in the garage.

My inspiration was this cute navy desk from Pottery Barn Kids, which sell for a cool $539 (whoa!). I love the color. It says “boy” to me…

So I found a classic spray paint ย in a SATIN sheen (the gloss just looked too cheap). I spray primed it first. (Ok… really I didn’t. But you should !) I did sand, however… I think.

I know you’re wondering why I spray painted it especially when I own a paint company. I didn’t feel like dirtying a roller. And I didn’t want to roll the inside of the drawers. Spraying is much faster!

After 4 cans of Navy spray paint and new handles, it is a keeper! My neighbors (thank you Paula!) had some dining room chairs sitting out for the trash… so I grabbed one. The scale of this chair is much better than the one that came with the desk .

Naval - Navy Desk Paint Idea Magic Brush

You couldย also consider using Naval chalk-type paint by Heirloom Traditions. Chalk-type paint looks so good on furniture!

Hey! Love the Desk! Where did you get the signs above the desk? I’ve been looking for that kind of thing for my son’s room!

Amazing what spray paint can do.

And what else does your neighbor throw away?

LOVE THIS! I love Pottery Barn for inspiration and the occasional tableware accessory, but seriously, my stay-at-home mom budget does not allow for thousands of dollars worth of baby/toddler furniture. I do get wonderful ideas from their catalogs and display rooms!

I think it looks GREAT! I think spray paint gives furniture a better finish than a brush (sorry, I’m just sayin’). It looks smoother and better in the end. The fact that it’s TONS easier kinda helps pull my vote to a spray can, though!

I love, love , love the desk. I just plain love painted furniture. You know I keep seeing all these gorgeous rooms that mom’s have put together for their kiddos and it gives me this nagging question: Do the kids care at all what goes into their rooms? I’m in the process of doing my 8 year old son’s room (9 this summer)and he has such definite (and ever changing) tastes that it can be very frustrating. He HATES painted furniture. He likes it stained. Which is totally a pain in the keister if you’re not buying it new. We aren’t. So, how do you settle decorating differences with your kids – or is it even an issue? I want my son to have a say in his room within certain boundaries, but I still want it to look decent.

    Thanks. I enjoyed your post.
    Pam

I love your transformation. I like how you were “inspired” by another piece but didn’t feel like you had to replicate it exactly. That is such a wonderful example of going for the “feel” and spirit of the inspiration piece. You accomplished it!! I gave you an award on my blog!! Blessings!
