Here is my client’s bombay chest before.
And here it is after.
First, we deglossed and sanded the piece. Next… we used Sage Green Aquabond for our basecolor. It’s available online. You could also use Sherwin Williams color “Svelte Sage”.
It’s close in color. Just get it in an eggshell sheen. You don’t want flat. You don’t want shiny.
Base color is on. I’m panicking. I thought the piece was pretty to begin with. The designer didn’t actually tell me what to do on it. She said green. Apple green? Sage green? Forest green? Army green? WHAT GREEN?????????
Too late for panicking now… it’s green. Let’s continue.
I glazed it with that coffee can of color sitting in the corner of the picture! This is where the “flaky-artist” part of me rears her ugly head. I don’t know what the color is. I know it’s Stain and Seal from Faux Effects/Aqua Finishing Solutions. I’m gonna say it’s closest in color to “American Walnut“. There is thinner mixed with it.
If you were wanting to glaze it with a glaze from a paint store… I’d pick a dark brown glaze that has more red in it than green. Make sure it is dark and that you can thin it out.
Here is one panel glazed on the Bombay chest.
Brush it on heavy.
Leave it dark in the crevices, but wipe the rest off with cheesecloth. You can order cheesecloth from Home Depot.
Have Joy come help you and the make sure the neighbor kids come to watch.
But wait! There is more!!!!!! I added FolkArt’s “Pure Gold” $.99 bottle to color to all of the details edges. It sealed the deal.
“Ohhhhhh ahhhhh” over the finish. It’s all done!
What a gorgeous, rich Bombay chest! Hope you like the transformation!

Gorgeous!! It looks like it belongs at the Biltmore House. Oh, and I finally figured out what I would spend $1000 on… the camera of my dreams! Have a great day. Blessings!
It turned out beautiful. And I agree, the gold sealed the deal!
GORGEOUS!!!!!!!I wish you were my neighbor so I can watch step by step and ask my oodles of questions… Last year on CG I purchased a 50’s Drexal Bedroom set for 300… it is gorgeous, although since the 50’s its yellowed on some areas… this would be the perfect thing for me to do, if I could only get enough courage! Since my pieces are all wood, is it also possible to sand them all down and stain them? Thank you…
Hey girlie….that turned out gorgeous. Love all the crack and crevice details! Yes…the gold SEALED the deal. And thanks for your impressions of Clark Griswald’s brother…priceless..I’m still giggling.
LOVE the bombay chest! It’s a beauty.
You’re so generous with all your tips. I think I need to print up a folder or binder just from you blog. Ever thought of doing a book?
Have great week-end!
Beautiful!
That looks so great! I love your paint choice!
So pretty Jennifer!
You KNOW I love it. So me!
Very pretty Jen! I have to laugh at the table in your living room setup – little itty bitty tarp, just enough to get under that table – all while the rest of your carpet is exposed! LoL – thats the artist, wild in his own home effect!
I love watching what you do to furniture! I so enjoyed scrolling through your past posts and seeing all you have done. Wonderful Talent! Thank you for sharing it with us.

Love it! Another great job!
Beautiful job!
it looks like you dropped a pretty penny on that thing for sure! fabulous makeover, simply fabulous. 🙂
I have to tell you, that is a gorgeous piece of furniture! I think you could have painted it purple with green polka dots and it would have looked great {well, maybe not green polka dots}. Wonderful job!
I’m drooling! Beautiful makeover. The gold touches, perfection!
A new follower!

That chest is gorgeous! You really did a wonderful job with a great piece. I know your “what green?” feeling. Give me some direction, here, people. Anyway, it’s nice to see how another decorative artist does things. I’ve never used the brand of paint you’re talking about. I always use SW products. I also almost always use semi-gloss finishes for my furniture, so it’s nice to read about someone who’s sold on satin.
Those hubbies can be so demanding! Love the bombay. Absolutely beautiful!
